Kumasi-based luxury automobile dealer, Mr. Prince Kumi, popularly known as Maxi the Car Dealer, has made headlines after successfully bidding US$5,000 for an exclusive, handcrafted Warrior King wristwatch designed in honour of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene.
The prestigious auction formed part of activities marking the climax of the three-day King’s Day Celebration, organised by the Hollywood and African Diaspora Awards (HAPPA) at the historic Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The celebration, which brought together distinguished personalities, business leaders, cultural enthusiasts and members of the African diaspora, paid tribute to the remarkable leadership, cultural influence and global stature of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who was recognised as the King of the African Diaspora.
One of the memorable highlights of the celebration was the auction of the specially designed Warrior King wristwatch, a distinctive timepiece symbolising royalty, prestige and the enduring legacy of the Asante monarchy.
The handcrafted watch was produced by Warrior King, an Accra-based Ghanaian watch design and manufacturing brand.
Widely recognised within Kumasi’s business community, Mr. Kumi has established himself as a prominent dealer in premium automobiles, earning the popular business identity Maxi the Car Dealer.
He is also a member of the Kumasi Hill Top Club, an association that brings together some of Kumasi’s affluent entrepreneurs, established business executives and influential personalities from various sectors of the economy.
Beyond its commercial value, the Warrior King wristwatch carries considerable symbolic significance. As a commemorative creation honouring Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, it reflects the intersection of traditional authority, cultural identity and contemporary African enterprise.
The successful auction also placed the spotlight on Ghana’s emerging luxury craftsmanship industry, demonstrating how indigenous brands can draw inspiration from the country’s cultural institutions to create products with both local significance and international appeal.
For Mr. Prince Kumi, the acquisition represents more than ownership of an exclusive wristwatch. It is a lasting association with a historic celebration of the Asantehene and a tribute to the institution of the Golden Stool.
The King’s Day Celebration, meanwhile, provided a platform for recognising the Asantehene’s contributions to cultural preservation, peacebuilding, leadership and the strengthening of relationships between Africa and its global diaspora.
As the curtain fell on the three-day celebration at Manhyia Palace, Maxi’s successful bid stood out as a memorable moment, one that brought together entrepreneurship, Ghanaian craftsmanship, and royal heritage.
For a watch designed to honour a King, its greatest significance may lie not merely in telling time, but in commemorating a moment in history.
