President John Dramani Mahama has assured the Black Stars of the full backing of the government and people of Ghana as the team prepares for its opening match against Panama in Toronto.
In a message to the team, President Mahama said the national side carries the hopes, dreams, and heritage of Ghanaians as they represent the country at their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance.
He described the team’s participation as a reflection of Ghana’s resilience and urged the players to play with pride, determination, and commitment to the national flag.
“Our gallant Black Stars, as you stand on the threshold of your first match against Panama in Toronto, the Government and the over thirty million people of Ghana stand firmly behind you,” the President said.
He added that the team represents every Ghanaian, from communities across the country, and encouraged players to draw inspiration from the support of citizens at home and abroad.
President Mahama also called on Ghanaians in the diaspora, particularly those in Toronto and across North America, to support the team by serving as the “12th Man” during the tournament.
He urged fans to bring the colours of the national flag — red, gold, and green — to the stands and create an atmosphere that reminds the players of the nation’s support.
The President further announced that the government had secured official television broadcast rights for the tournament, allowing citizens across Ghana to watch the Black Stars’ matches.
He said the move was aimed at ensuring that football-loving Ghanaians from Axim to Bawku and Ho to Hamile could follow the team’s journey at the global competition.
“Play for the flag. Play for the children dreaming of greatness in your footsteps. The world is watching, and we are confident that the Black Star will shine brighter than ever before on this global stage,” President Mahama stated.
