The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has announced that the long-awaited Bupe–Tamale–Yendi Water Supply Project, valued at approximately €312 million, is advancing steadily and is expected to provide a lasting solution to the chronic water shortages affecting Tamale and surrounding communities.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) in Tamale on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Hon. Mutawakilu disclosed that the Government of Ghana has already secured €106 million to commence implementation of the project.
He said the project is designed to produce about 135,000 cubic metres of water daily, translating into roughly 30 million gallons per day for Tamale and adjoining communities.
According to the GWL MD, the project represents the long-term solution to the region’s growing water demand, driven by rapid urbanization and population growth. He added that the company is also undertaking immediate interventions to improve water supply by upgrading the existing Tamale Water Treatment Plant.
Hon. Mutawakilu explained that GWL has begun replacing ageing and obsolete components at the facility to improve operational efficiency and increase production while preparations for the larger project continue.
He further assured stakeholders that the project would proceed without interruptions once construction begins, stressing that adequate financing arrangements had been put in place to ensure contractors receive timely payments whenever funds are required.
The GWL MD also introduced a team of experts tasked with conducting the project’s Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). He said the exercise would identify affected persons and properties to facilitate compensation payments before construction starts.
The team, he noted, will return to Accra to finalize preparatory documentation before coming back to the Northern Region to begin the assessment process, a key step toward full-scale implementation.
Hon. Mutawakilu appealed to the Northern Regional Minister, traditional authorities, local assemblies and residents to cooperate fully with the assessment team and project implementers to ensure the successful execution of the project.
The Northern Regional Minister Hon. Ali Adolf John described the project as a major step toward resolving the region’s longstanding water challenges.
He noted that addressing Tamale’s perennial water shortages was one of President John Dramani Mahama’s key campaign commitments to the people of Northern Ghana and said the appointment of Hon. Mutawakilu as GWL MD reflected the government’s determination to fulfil that pledge.
Describing the GWL MD as an “action-oriented leader,” the Minister expressed confidence in his ability to deliver critical water infrastructure projects across northern Ghana.
“The perennial water problem in Tamale is long overdue for resolution, and with the commitment of President John Dramani Mahama’s government and the leadership of Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, this challenge will soon become a thing of the past,” Hon. Ali Adolf John stated.
The Minister assured GWL of the full support of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, traditional leaders and residents throughout the implementation period, emphasizing the project’s immense socio-economic importance to the region.
The meeting was attended by Tamale Mayor Hon. Abubakari Adam Takoro, Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Abdulai Imoro Gong, Regional Political Coordinator Mr. Abdallah A. Baba, and Acting Chief Director of the NRCC Mr. Sumaila Ewuntomah Abudu.
