The National Service Authority has announced plans to introduce basic military training for all National Service Personnel (NSPs) as part of a new emergency readiness initiative aimed at fostering discipline, patriotism, and physical fitness among young graduates.
The announcement follows high-level discussions held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, between the management of the National Service Authority and the Ghana Armed Forces at the Ministry of Defence.
The meeting focused on operationalizing the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP), a key national initiative supported by the presidency.
The programme, which is scheduled to begin on August 3, 2025, will provide participating service personnel with up to two months of basic military drills and paramilitary orientation.
Director-General of the National Service Authority, Mr. Felix Gyamfi, emphasized the importance of the initiative, describing it as a strategic move to engage Ghanaian youth in national development efforts.
“This military training component is crucial. It will help instill discipline, promote nationalism, and enhance the physical conditioning of our service personnel.
This is a positive step in resetting the mindset of our youth towards a stronger, more united nation,” Mr. Gyamfi stated.
The concept was initially outlined by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his maiden State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, where he expressed support for short-term military training for service personnel as part of a broader national development vision.
Assuring the National Service Authority of the military’s commitment, Brigadier General Amoah-Boakye confirmed that the Ghana Armed Forces is prepared to deliver the training modules when the programme launches.
“We are fully on board to provide the necessary support and training required to make this initiative successful,” he affirmed.
The NSERRP will be rolled out nationwide, targeting thousands of graduates entering the mandatory national service scheme each year.
The programme is expected to bolster emergency preparedness while fostering a culture of civic responsibility among the country’s youth.
As Ghana seeks innovative ways to engage its young workforce in national development, the introduction of military training under the NSERRP marks a significant shift in the structure of national service.
With strong backing from both the presidency and the military, the programme signals a new era of readiness and responsibility for the next generation of Ghanaian leaders.
