Northern Ghana has recorded a major breakthrough in specialised healthcare with the successful delivery of the region’s first baby through In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) at Aisha Fertility Centre in Tamale.

The milestone was announced on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at a ceremony where Aisha Hospital also commissioned a new dialysis unit, expanding access to specialised renal care in the region.

The development means couples seeking advanced fertility treatment can now access IVF services closer to home, potentially reducing the need to travel outside Northern Ghana for treatment.

Medical Director of Aisha Hospital, Dr Sheila Isahaku, described the successful IVF delivery as a defining moment for the facility and a demonstration of what modern medicine and dedicated healthcare professionals could achieve.

She said the birth offered renewed hope to couples who had endured years of infertility and uncertainty.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Sagnarigu, Abdulai Imoro Gong, who represented the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, described the two developments as significant milestones for healthcare delivery in Northern Ghana.

He said the IVF breakthrough demonstrated that advanced reproductive healthcare was becoming increasingly accessible in the region, while the dialysis unit would provide an additional option for patients living with kidney disease.

The new facility is also expected to help ease pressure on existing dialysis services, including those at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Gong commended Aisha Hospital’s founder and CEO, Chief Dr Doliwura Zakaria, as well as the hospital’s medical and support staff, for investing in specialised healthcare services.

He called for stronger collaboration between government and private healthcare providers to expand access to specialised medical services in the region.

Education Minister and MP, Haruna Iddrisu, also commended Chief Dr Doliwura Zakaria for transforming Aisha Hospital into a growing centre for specialised healthcare.

Iddrisu urged doctors, nurses, embryologists, laboratory personnel and other staff, particularly those working at the IVF Centre, to uphold strict professional and ethical standards.

He placed particular emphasis on patient confidentiality, given the sensitive nature of fertility treatment.

Iddrisu subsequently commissioned the new dialysis unit, formally opening it for service.

The two developments mark a significant expansion of specialised healthcare capacity in Northern Ghana, positioning Aisha Hospital to provide fertility and renal services that were previously less accessible to residents of the region.
