The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled October 3, 2026, for its National Executive Elections, setting in motion a timeline that will see aspirants file their nominations from August 23 to 27.
The announcement was contained in an update issued by the party’s National Elections Committee and signed by its Chairman, Frederick Opare-Ansah, on August 11, 2026.
According to the timetable, nominations will open on August 17 and close on August 22, followed by the filing of nomination forms from August 23 to 27.
Vetting of aspirants is scheduled for August 31 to September 3, with the results expected to be published on September 5.
Candidates who are dissatisfied with the vetting outcomes will have September 6 and 7 to submit appeals, while the National Executive Committee and National Council are expected to meet on September 10.
The Notice of Poll is scheduled for September 14, ahead of the elections on October 3.
Eligibility requirements
The party said aspirants must meet a number of eligibility requirements to contest the national executive positions.
Among other conditions, candidates must be known and active registered party members for at least two years, be of good character and be members in good standing.
They must also have paid party membership dues for at least the past two years, paid the prescribed nomination fees and satisfied the National Vetting Committee that they qualify to contest the position.
The party further requires each nomination form to be endorsed by at least one member in good standing from each of the 16 regions.
Aspirants for National Youth Organiser must also be below 40 years of age.
The National Elections Committee stressed that it would be the responsibility of each aspiring national executive to demonstrate that they had satisfied all eligibility and qualification requirements.
Elections Committee
The elections will be conducted by a nine-member National Elections Committee chaired by former Communications Minister Frederick Opare-Ansah.
The committee includes former Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei-Asare as Vice Chairperson, Oboshie Sai Coffie, Frank Davies Esq., Anthony Karbo, Salam Ama Mpianimaa Damata, Eric Ntori and the Ashanti Regional Chairman, with Evans Nimako serving as Secretary.
The party said no member of the National Elections Committee would be eligible to contest the elections.
Where a committee member decides to contest, the National Executive Committee will appoint a replacement.
Vetting and appeals
A separate nine-member National Vetting Committee, chaired by former Education Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah, will vet all aspirants.
The committee has been mandated to recommend the disqualification of any aspirant it determines does not meet the eligibility requirements for a national office.
Candidates or party members aggrieved by a vetting decision may submit a written petition to the National Appeals Committee.
The Appeals Committee, chaired by former Attorney-General Joe Ghartey, is required to determine petitions within 48 hours.
A dissatisfied petitioner may subsequently appeal to the National Executive Committee, whose decision will be final and binding.
Nomination fees
The NPP has set different fees for the various national executive positions.
Aspirants for National Chairperson will pay GH¢50,000 for nomination forms, while Vice Chairpersons will pay GH¢30,000 and the General Secretary GH¢25,000.
Nomination forms for other national executive positions will cost GH¢10,000, while aspirants for the Nasara, Women and Youth wings will pay GH¢8,000.
The party said payments would be accepted in cash or by cash cheque at its national headquarters at Asylum Down.
Aspirants who download nomination forms from the party’s website will still be required to pay the prescribed fee and obtain an official receipt before their completed forms can be accepted for filing.
Positions up for election
The elections will cover nine national executive positions: National Chairperson, National Vice Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Treasurer, National Organiser, National Women Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Nasara Organiser and National Communication Director.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana is expected to conduct the elections under the supervision of the National Elections Committee and in accordance with the Political Parties Act, 2000 (Act 574).
Electoral College
The party said the Electoral College for the national executive elections would comprise members of the National Council and National Executive Committee, as well as members of Regional, Constituency and External Branch Executive Committees.
It will also include members of the National Council of Elders, the National TESCON Coordinator, TESCON presidents from recognised tertiary institutions, 30 National Patrons elected from among themselves, founding members who signed the party’s registration documents at the Electoral Commission, and all NPP Members of Parliament.
The party’s special organs — the National Women, National Youth and National Nasara Wings — will also participate in the electoral process.
For the National Women Organiser position, every female delegate at the National Delegates Conference, including TESCON Women Commissioners, will be eligible to vote.
For National Youth Organiser, every youth delegate at the National Delegates Conference, including TESCON Presidents from accredited institutions, will be eligible.
The National Nasara Organiser will be elected by the National Nasara Coordinator and deputies, former national Nasara coordinators and deputies, regional and constituency Nasara coordinators and deputies, external branch Nasara coordinators and deputies, and TESCON Nasara coordinators.
The party further stated that at least one-third of delegates to the National Delegates Conference must be present to constitute a quorum.
The announcement formally begins the process towards the NPP’s national executive elections, with aspirants now expected to prepare for the opening of nominations on August 17.
