Vincent Ekow Assafour, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo Constituency, has strongly criticized government officials for their lack of response following the heavy rainfall on Sunday, May 18.
The downpour caused severe flooding in parts of Accra, including East Legon Hills, Lakeside, and Pantang, resulting in the tragic loss of three lives and displacing many residents.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, MP Assafour expressed his deep sorrow for the affected families.
He wrote, “Yesterday’s downpour has left parts of Accra especially East Legon Hills, Lakeside, and Pantang in distress. According to media reports, three lives have been lost and many more displaced by the floods. My heart goes out to every family affected. This pain is one we all feel.”
The MP also lamented the government’s silence in the face of the disaster.
“What makes it even more painful is the silence. As of now, there’s been no official word from government to commiserate with the grieving families or those displaced,” he said.
He emphasized that leadership requires not only action but also presence, empathy, and comforting words during such crises.
“In moments like this, leadership is not just about action it’s also about presence, empathy, and words that comfort”.
MP Assafour urged authorities to do better to protect lives and reduce suffering in future events.
“This tragedy reminds us again of how vulnerable we are, and how preventable some of these losses could be. We must do better. For those we’ve lost. For those still hurting. For the future,” he concluded.
