Kansas City, July 3 — Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey came to an end on Friday after a disciplined Colombia side secured a 1-0 victory in the Round of 32 to advance to the last 16.
An early goal from Jhon Arias proved decisive as Colombia produced a composed display to extend their unbeaten run at the tournament to four matches and book a Round of 16 clash with Switzerland.
The Black Stars made an encouraging start, with captain Thomas Partey testing Colombia’s defence with a powerful long-range effort inside the opening two minutes. However, Colombia gradually took control of possession and dictated the tempo of the contest.
The breakthrough came in the 14th minute when Luis Suárez, who replaced the injured Jhon Córdoba, surged down the right flank before delivering a low cross into the penalty area for Arias to steer first-time into the bottom corner.
Colombia continued to threaten and nearly doubled their advantage before the break. Luis Díaz fired narrowly wide before Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced an outstanding reflex save to deny Johan Mojica’s close-range header.
Díaz thought he had extended Colombia’s lead early in the second half, but his effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. The Liverpool winger was presented with another clear opportunity moments later but was denied by Ati-Zigi.
Despite trailing for most of the contest, Ghana struggled to break through Colombia’s organised defence and failed to register a shot on target throughout the match.
The defeat also extended Ghana’s difficult record against South American opposition at the FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars remain without a victory in four World Cup meetings against CONMEBOL nations.
Although their campaign ends in the first knockout round, Ghana can reflect on an impressive return to the global stage. Otto Addo’s side opened the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Panama, earned a goalless draw against England, and progressed from the group stage despite a 2-1 defeat to Croatia.
Colombia will now travel to Vancouver, where they will face Switzerland on July 7 for a place in the quarter-finals.
