The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested six suspected members of a motorbike theft syndicate and recovered 17 motorcycles believed to have been stolen from various parts of the Wa Municipality and surrounding communities.
The arrests followed intelligence-led operations launched after a victim reported the theft of her black Luojia motorbike, registration number M-21-UW 3512, on July 11, 2026. The motorcycle had been parked at the Ghana National Fire Service premises in Jirapa when it was stolen.
According to a police statement issued on Thursday, the victim shared details of the stolen motorbike with friends and the police, leading officers to trace and arrest Nasiru Muftawu at Loho while he was in possession of the motorcycle.
Police said the suspect admitted during interrogation to stealing the motorbike and was subsequently taken into custody to assist with investigations.
Further intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of five additional suspects identified as Basit Muftawu, also known as Posey, 19; Issahaku Maruf, alias Katel, 22; Mohammed Ali, alias Geewaa, 18; Rashid Kankan, 20; Mutala Rashad, 20; and Haruna Hamdan, alias DJ, 20. Police also recovered additional exhibits believed to be connected to the alleged criminal activities.
The command said continued investigations resulted in the recovery of 16 more stolen motorbikes from UBIDS, Chakor and Glamon, all within the Wa Municipality, bringing the total number of recovered motorcycles to 17.
The suspects have been arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court and remanded into police custody. They are expected to reappear before the court on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The Upper West Regional Police Command has appealed to members of the public who have lost motorbikes to visit the Wa District Police Headquarters with valid ownership documents to identify and retrieve their recovered motorcycles.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating crime and dismantling criminal networks in the region. It also encouraged the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support policing efforts.
