The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has honoured Ghana’s oldest female pensioner, Ima Zenabu Dagomba, in Wa as she marked her 100th birthday.
Born on July 1, 1926, Ima Zenabu retired on January 31, 1992, and was enrolled onto the SSNIT pension payroll in March 1993. She has received monthly pension benefits continuously for 33 years and four months, making her the longest-serving female SSNIT pensioner in the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, SSNIT’s Tamale Area Manager, Mr. Kpakpa Quartey, described the centenarian as a pioneer whose life demonstrates the importance of contributing consistently to a pension scheme to ensure financial security in retirement.
He said her continued presence on the Scheme more than three decades after retirement highlights the long-term value of social security and the critical role SSNIT plays in safeguarding the welfare of retired workers.
Mr. Quartey urged self-employed persons, traders, farmers and workers in both the formal and informal sectors to enrol on the SSNIT Scheme, stressing that a secure retirement depends on regular contributions throughout one’s working life.
He reaffirmed SSNIT’s commitment to the welfare of pensioners, describing them as the foundation upon which the country’s workforce has been built, while encouraging the public to embrace the national pension scheme.
Receiving the honour, Ima Zenabu Dagomba expressed appreciation to the management of SSNIT for recognising her on her 100th birthday and thanked the Trust for its continued support throughout her retirement.
The event was attended by executives of the National Pensioners Association in the Upper West Region, SSNIT management and staff, traditional leaders, relatives and other invited guests.
