The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has doubled the capacity of its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from four to eight beds while extending piped oxygen to all beds in critical clinical areas of the hospital.

The development is part of a major transformation programme by the hospital’s management to strengthen emergency and critical care services and improve patient outcomes.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TTH, Dr (Med.) Abubakari Bawah Abdulai, disclosed this at a staff durbar at the hospital on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

He said oxygen piping had now been extended to beds at the Accident and Emergency Department, ICU, Dialysis Unit, operating theatres and other critical areas, improving access to lifesaving oxygen therapy.

Dr Bawah Abdulai said the hospital had also added beds to improve patient accommodation and rehabilitated critical equipment, including ventilators, anaesthesia machines, an orthopaedic theatre table and autoclaves.

The interventions, he said, were complemented by improved supplies of medical consumables to support uninterrupted clinical services.

More projects in pipeline

The CEO said radiological services had also improved, with reduced downtime of the CT scanner at the Advanced Imaging Centre.

He attributed further improvements in hospital operations to a more reliable water supply, which he said had strengthened sanitation and infection prevention measures.

Dr Bawah Abdulai disclosed that a new autoclave had been installed at the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), while new laundry equipment had also been installed.

Six boreholes have also been drilled and are awaiting mechanisation to augment water supply across the facility.

He said construction was ongoing on the hospital’s main entrance, while work was also underway on a new cardiology centre with support from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.

The hospital is also preparing to install a new oxygen plant and retool its diagnostic services with modern equipment, including an MRI machine, CT scanner and mammography equipment.

Plans are also underway to rehabilitate and expand the hospital’s power supply system, including the installation of solar energy infrastructure.

Dr Bawah Abdulai said the investments were intended to create a more resilient hospital capable of providing quality care to patients while improving working conditions for staff.
