Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called on members of the Council of State to prioritize national interest above short-term political gains and to also demonstrate true inclusivity in their work.
Speaking at the orientation of the new members of the Council of State, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang urged the council to rise above partisan lines and focus on the greater good of the nation.
She stressed that the Council of State, which serves as a key advisory body to the President, must work tirelessly to foster unity and national progress.
“It is imperative that this esteemed body not only serves as a source of counsel but also as an embodiment of national unity. We must purge ourselves from the popular accusation of merely existing as a symbolic institution. We must create a paradigm shift, placing national interest above party politics, and ensuring inclusivity in every decision we make.”
The Vice President’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the role of the Council of State, with critics often questioning its relevance in the face of Ghana’s evolving political landscape.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that this change in direction would require commitment, integrity, and a willingness to move beyond partisan ideologies, focusing solely on the advancement of the country and its people.
Also, Chairman of the council of state, Right Honorable Edward Doe Adjaho advised members endeavor to put people first, Uphold the law and ensure genuine care for people.
“We must speak truth to those that we advise, engage with leadership and the people, connect with policy decisions to tackle the challenges facing our democracy. It is the surest way our deliberations at all times can benefit both government and the Ghanaian public”.
