New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful Bernard Antwi-Boasiako has appealed to professional groups within the party in the Ashanti Region to support his bid to lead the party at the national level.
Addressing members of the party’s professional networks, the Ashanti Regional Chairman popularly known as Chairman Wontumi acknowledged his imperfections but expressed confidence in his ability to effectively lead the party.
“I am not perfect, but I can do the job for the NPP,” he told the gathering.
Wontumi said his experience as Ashanti Regional Chairman has equipped him with the skills needed to manage the party, noting that he has also learned important lessons from the party’s time in government and its current position in opposition.
“I have learnt a lot from what has happened, and I can assure you that past mistakes will not be repeated,” he said.
Highlighting his political journey, he described himself as a grassroots-oriented leader, having risen through the ranks from a constituency chairman in Bosomtwe to serving three terms as Ashanti Regional Chairman.
“I am going to be a grassroots working chairman,” he said, adding that his leadership style would prioritize the base of the party.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for participants to engage him directly, with some raising concerns and criticizing aspects of his past leadership.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Antwi-Boasiako pledged to unite the youth within the party ahead of future elections and emphasized the importance of strong collaboration between party leadership and its presidential candidate.
He noted that he shares a close relationship with the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, and assured delegates that this would enhance party cohesion.
“There should be a strong working relationship between the National Chairman and the flagbearer. I can assure you that will not be a problem between myself and Dr. Bawumia,” he said.
Mr. Antwi-Boasiako also proposed that party appointments under a future NPP government should be driven by recommendations from constituency levels to reward grassroots contributions.
He stressed that such an approach would ensure fairness and recognize the efforts of party members at the local level.
