Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has cautioned Media General, owners of Onua TV, against the dangers of irresponsible journalism.
The warning comes amidst controversy surrounding Captain Smart, host of Onua TV’s morning show, who has been accused of inciting youths in Obuasi to invade the AngloGold Ashanti mining site, resulting in the tragic loss of at least six lives.
Awuni, a staunch advocate for media freedom and accountability, emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in maintaining the integrity of the profession.
He posted “Irresponsible journalism can undermine media freedom”, he warned.
He urged Media General to maintain its reputation for credible journalism rather than prioritizing sensationalism for the sake of eye bows.
“Don’t lose your respect for eyeballs”
“It is better to do peer review and self-regulation than allow the politicians to do it for us.”
In a series of social media posts, Awuni clarified that his criticism was not motivated by personal animosity towards Captain Smart or Media General. Instead, he sought to highlight the need for media outlets to prioritize accuracy, fairness, and accountability in their reporting. Awuni has consistently defended journalists against harassment and arrest, including Captain Smart’s own arrest in 2022.
“I have often defended journalists when they are arrested or harassed. One such example was the arrest of Captain Smart in 2022. I also did a post detailing how some top government officials influenced Captain Smart’s sacking from Angel FM. So, I don’t hate Captain Smart or Media General. That media house is one of the few doing real journalism, and we should safeguard it. It is better to do peer review and self-regulation than allow the politicians to do it for us”.
The incident has sparked widespread debate about the role of journalists in shaping public opinion and the consequences of irresponsible reporting. As the media landscape in Ghana continues to evolve, Awuni’s warning serves as a timely reminder of the significant influence wielded by journalists and the importance of responsible reporting.
