Chaos erupted at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council during the Ashanti Regional Council of State election, disrupting the voting process and leading to the destruction of electoral materials.
The election, which involved 86 delegates from various municipal and district assemblies and 12 candidates was thrown into turmoil when violence broke out during the sorting of ballots.
As sorting progressed, it became evident that Nana Nkansah Boadu was leading in the vote count, with his stack of ballots significantly out numbering those of his competitors.
His agent Known as Obour noticing the trend, signaled supporters, prompting jubilant cheers from the crowd.
However, the reaction from his supporters raised suspicions among opponents, particularly those backing the ruling party’s candidate, former Ashanti Regional Chairman Yaw Owusu Obempeh.
Fearing a potential defeat, a group of unidentified men stormed the venue, violently disrupting the process.
EIB’s Ashanti regional correspondent Isaac Justice Bediako reported that the assailants vandalized ballot boxes, tables, and other electoral materials, effectively halting the election.
Despite the presence of police officers at the venue, they were unable to intervene as the chaos unfolded.
No arrests were made, further raising concerns about security at the election.
Agent Obour who spoke Isaac Justice Bediako said his candidate Nana Nkansah Boadu had secured 46 out of 86 votes with about 10 more ballot papers to added to his votes.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti regional director of electoral commission Mr. Francis Osei Nsiah refused to speak to the media when EIB- New team approach his for the EC’s next plan for the Ashanti regional council of state elections.
Unfortunately, two journalists including Oyerepa FM reporter Kofi Adade who was filming the attack on EC official and their electoral materials was assaulted.
It took the intervention of the police to rescure him.
