Wangkang Ceramics Company Limited, a Chinese firm operating in Eshiem within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region, has been given a one-week deadline to halt all illegal activities.

The Ceramics production firm activities has been identify as a major contributing factor affecting the flow and quality of River Anankore, a key water body at Inchaban.

Earnest Hoffman, an officer from the Water Resources Commission (WRC) at Ghana Water Company Limited, briefed Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson on the company’s disregard for directives concerning its operations.

In response, Minister Joseph Nelson issued a firm warning, stating that the company’s activities must not interfere with the operations of Ghana Water Company Limited.

The water company had earlier reported the Chinese firm to the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) after the company refused to comply with directives from both Ghana Water Company Limited and the WRC. Attempts to resolve the issue had been unsuccessful due to the company’s reluctance to cooperate.

However, on Friday, March 7, 2025, Minister Joseph Nelson intervened to broker a peaceful resolution to the longstanding dispute.

He emphasized that the production and supply of water to the metropolis and its surrounding communities must not be disrupted by the company’s activities. As a result, he directed the firm to immediately adopt alternative waste management measures and ensure that River Anankore remains free from obstructions.

The Minister stressed that implementing these measures would enable Ghana Water Company Limited to continue its operations without challenges. He further ordered the ceramic company to cease all pollution of the water body and adhere strictly to environmental regulations.

The company has been given a one-week deadline to comply with the directive and report back, as the resolution of the matter depends entirely on its actions moving forward.
