Kofi Obiri Yeboah Esq, Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 electoral defeat to the party’s failure to prioritize its Ashanti Region stronghold and address critical economic grievances.
Speaking in an interview with Oyerepa FM, monitored by Kumasimail, the first-term MP delivered a sharp critique of the party’s strategic oversights.
He said “Let me make a very controversial statement. I personally think that we lost because we overlooked areas that vote for us. We did not take care of our stronghold, especially the Ashanti Region. As a political party, we need to hold our stronghold.”
Yeboah highlighted the controversial handling of domestic bondholder funds as a pivotal misstep, alienating middle-class voters.
“Touching bondholders’ investments was a fatal error. These are future-focused, middle-class citizens who traditionally support the NPP. Even former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo publicly protested, yet the government ignored the outcry,” he remarked
The legislator reiterated his criticism of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s prolonged tenure, which he claims exacerbated public frustration.
“I was definitely in support of the view that Ken Ofori-Atta must go. I do not understand why NPP parliamentarians allowed themselves to be convinced otherwise.
“If you recall, when Amin Adam became the Finance Minister, the economy began to gain strength. I am not in any way saying that Ken Ofori-Atta was not competent, but wisdom does not reside in one head”, he emphasized.
Yeboah’s predecessor, Eugene Boakye Antwi, had earlier pinpointed Ofori-Atta’s delayed dismissal (until February 2024) as a critical factor in the NPP’s loss, citing voter apathy that saw nearly one-third of registered voters abstain.
