Wontumi TV has issued an unreserved apology to President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public after one of its presenters made unfounded claims linking the President to the recent Ghana Air Force helicopter tragedy.

In a statement released on Tuesday, August 12, the television station  owned by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi  described the remarks by presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare on Saturday, August 9, as “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.”

The management stressed that the comments did not reflect the station’s official stance and were made without any supporting evidence.

“As a responsible media house, we deeply regret the distress and reputational harm this may have caused to the President, the NDC, and the affected families,” the statement read.

Wontumi TV further assured the public that disciplinary measures would be taken against the presenter and that its editorial guidelines had been reinforced to ensure all broadcasts are based on verified and credible information.

The apology comes amid wider regulatory challenges for Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) recently suspended three of its radio stations   95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi  over regulatory breaches, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operations from unapproved transmitter locations.

The suspensions took effect after the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President Mahama for defaulting stations to address violations.
