KT Hammond slams NPP ‘bragging’ Billionaires: Where were you in 2000?

KT Hammond slams NPP ‘bragging’ Billionaires: Where were you in 2000?

Former Adansi Asokwa MP, KT Hammond, has taken a strong stance against wealthy individuals currently prominent in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), questioning their absence during the party’s early financial struggles leading up to the 2000 elections.

Addressing supporters during Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign tour in the Adansi zone of the Ashanti Region, Hammond challenged the narrative that Bawumia’s Muslim faith disqualifies him from becoming Ghana’s president.

He stated emphatically, “He’s a Muslim, so he can’t be President? Is this the kind of madness we want to spread in Ghana?”

Hammond further highlighted divisions within the party, contrasting the wealthy elite with the ordinary members who have stood by the party through thick and thin.

“If we say the party belongs to the rich and the poor, I am part of the poor members who support Dr. Bawumia,” he asserted.

Reflecting on the party’s financial hardships in 1999 and 2000, he recalled how the NPP was “broke” and relied on the dedication and resources of a few committed individuals who actively sought funding to finance the campaign that eventually led to the party’s victory and government formation.

“Where were the rich people back then? Those making noise today with their wealth were nowhere to be found. They did not contribute a penny,” Hammond emphasized.

He noted that those who did invest in the party’s success have remained humble and silent, unlike the current affluent voices.

Hammond remarked “Those of us who financed the party to win the 2000 election, have you seen us bragging like them? We’ve been quiet, not because we don’t have anything to say.

“If you meet those rich men of the NPP today, ask them where they were before the NPP won the 2000 elections,” he added.

Even though KT Hammond did not mention anyone’s name, some netizens suggest his remarks were a direct attack on Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, both presidential aspirants.

Both Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong, while campaigning to be elected as the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate, have demonstrated how they have helped the party (financially) in many ways.
