Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced that the party’s candidate for the Tamale Central by-election will be declared winner without a vote.

In a statement on his official Facebook page, Tanko Computer congratulated Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu, the NDC parliamentary candidate, ahead of the official declaration.

He revealed that the candidates from the Peoples National Convention (PNC) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) have both withdrawn their nominations with the Electoral Commission (EC).

“As his two other contenders, PNC and LPG candidates, withdrew their nominations with the EC, it is well with us,” Tanko Computer wrote.

Tanko Computer argued that Under Regulation 12 of CI 127, “He (Prof. Seidu) would be declared winner on the 30th of September 2025 without any voting since he is the sole candidate per Reg. 12 of CI 127.”

Background:

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) held a competitive internal primary election to select its parliamentary candidate for the Tamale Central by-election necessitated by the death of the incumbent MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in a helicopter crash in August 2025.

The NDC primary, conducted on September 6, 2025, at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, featured 12 contenders vying for the party’s nomination. Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana and Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission, won decisively with 840 votes out of 1,511 valid ballots.

His closest rival, former Tamale Metropolitan Assembly Mayor Abdul Hanan Gundado, received 536 votes.

After the primary, all other NDC aspirants pledged their support to Prof. Seidu, emphasizing party unity moving forward. His nomination positioned him as the NDC’s candidate for the September 30 by-election to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant by Dr. Mohammed’s passing.

Opposition parties initially planned to contest but later withdrew their candidates, leaving Prof. Seidu as the sole contender to be declared winner.

The by-election period was condensed due to the tragic circumstances, compressing the normal campaign timeline.

Tamale Central has historically been an NDC stronghold, with voter support consistently favoring the party, which influenced strategic decisions by opposition parties not to contest aggressively.
