Former Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially declared her intention to contest the General Secretary position of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

She made the announcement on her Facebook page on Monday, October 20, coinciding with her birthday, calling on party supporters across the country to rally behind her bid to revive and reorganise the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“Dearest Patriots, I come to you on this day of my birth with genuine regards. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since our stormy face-off with ourselves and our base. We came out bruised, our individual and collective egos battered. We lie not in a good place. However, as our great tradition had demonstrated over the years… we will thrive,” she wrote.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful urged members of the party to remain hopeful, stressing that the NPP’s current challenges were part of a necessary phase of self-reflection and renewal.

“Scathed, we refuse to be burnt, and in the unlikely circumstance that we set ourselves in a blazing inferno… we will rise. It will shape us, mould us, and like the Phoenix, we will rise and be ready,” she added.

The former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West also took a swipe at the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as a “caretaker government” that rode to power on deceit and unfulfilled promises.

“This caretaker NDC government is there not just because they are preferred, they are there because they lied their way into government, amidst lofty promises, and caused belief in us to wane. But we will revive it,” she said.

She pledged to restore unity and confidence within the NPP from the grassroots level, noting that this would be key to reclaiming power in 2028.

“From the polling stations, through to the electoral areas, constituencies, and regions to the top, we will restore confidence in our party and unity amongst ourselves. That is the only dose we need to boot out this accident-of-a-government,” she stated.

In her declaration, the former minister described herself as “nurtured, proven, and prepared” to lead the NPP’s reorganisation efforts.

“On this day of my birth, Patriots, I come before you, the fighter you have always known… to join you on this collective journey to rescue our beloved country from this clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent government,” she said.

“I come to you in all humility, to ask you, dear patriots, to join me on this rescue mission as your next General Secretary,” she added.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said the NPP’s primary goal must be to “re-shape, re-organise, and put ourselves in a good place to effectively represent the desired change and restore the belief of Ghanaians in us as the institutors of growth and development.”

She concluded her message with a rallying call for unity within the party.

“Patriots, join me, let us commit to the struggle, for I know with unity and God on our side, as well as the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome.”
