Police in Hwidiem have rescued a team of military officers from the government’s anti-illegal mining task force, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), after they were attacked by an angry mob on Saturday.
According to police sources, the soldiers were conducting an operation against illegal mining activities in the area when they arrested two suspected miners and seized several vehicles and weapons.
The arrests reportedly triggered agitation among some residents, who confronted the officers, leading to a violent standoff.
The police, with the support of traditional and community leaders, intervened swiftly to calm tensions and ensure the soldiers’ safety.
The officers were subsequently evacuated to Kenyase, where they are reported to be safe.
Ahafo Regional Police Command has since confirmed that calm has been restored to Hwidiem following the incident.
Authorities say investigations are underway to identify those behind the attack and to maintain peace in the area as the anti-galamsey task force continues its operations.
