The launch of Air Transat’s new non-stop service between Toronto, Canada, and Accra, Ghana, is set to strengthen travel, trade, and cultural ties between the two countries, the High Commission of Canada in Ghana has announced.
Starting June 17 and running through October 22, 2026, the seasonal route will operate twice weekly on Wednesdays and Sundays.
The service marks the first direct air link between Canada and Ghana, eliminating the need for long European layovers and offering a faster, more efficient travel option for passengers.
The development follows the signing of the Air Transport Agreement (ATA) between the two countries in March 2025.
The agreement established a framework for direct flights and broadened aviation cooperation, allowing for up to 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly cargo flights by multiple carriers.
Officials say the arrangement is expected to stimulate trade, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
Air Transat’s entry into the Ghanaian market also comes as both nations prepare for heightened travel and global attention ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.
Canadian and Ghanaian authorities say the route will not only improve travel convenience but also support long-term economic and social benefits. With strong Ghanaian and African diaspora communities in Ontario, the airline anticipates steady demand.
“This announcement marks a historic milestone in Canada-Ghana relations,” said Myriam Montrat, High Commissioner of Canada in Ghana. “The new route, made possible by our recent Air Transport Agreement, opens a new chapter in our partnership—one that will deepen cooperation, expand opportunities for business and cultural exchanges, and strengthen the people-to-people connections that anchor our shared future.”
Sebastian Ponce, Chief Revenue Officer at Transat, said the airline is “honoured to be the first and only airline to offer a direct connection between Canada and Ghana,” adding that the route supports its growth strategy in Africa and responds to the needs of the Ghanaian diaspora in Ontario.
The new service is expected to promote tourism, investment opportunities and greater mobility between the two nations, further cementing Ghana’s role as a key partner for Canada in West Africa.
