The Ghana Police Service has deployed a special operations team to the Ashanti Region as part of efforts to address what officials describe as a rise in criminal activities in the Kumasi metropolis and surrounding districts.
According to a situation report dated March 25, 2026, a team of 111 personnel began patrol operations in Kumasi after being deployed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The team is being led by Bawah Abdul Jalil and Samuel Mustapha Abenzuo.
After commencing operations, the team paid a courtesy call on the Ashanti Regional Police Command, led by Arthur Osei-Akoto.
The visit was to formally introduce the team and strengthen coordination with the regional command structure.
During the meeting, the Regional Commander held a parade briefing with the team, where he outlined operational expectations and discussed the current security situation in the region.
He also expressed appreciation for the deployment, describing it as timely in view of the increasing crime rate in parts of the region.
The commander further assured the team of full support from the regional command, including the provision of intelligence on crime-prone areas to enhance proactive policing. He also directed divisional and district commanders to cooperate fully with the special operations team and provide timely security information.
Responding on behalf of the team, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil expressed gratitude to the regional command and reaffirmed the team’s readiness to work closely with other police units to improve security and restore public confidence.
The police say the deployment, combined with sustained patrols and coordinated operations among various units, is expected to strengthen law enforcement efforts and help reduce crime in Kumasi and its surrounding areas.
