Legendary Highlife musician Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has sparked debate over the global success of Ghanaian rapper Black Sherif, questioning whether international recognition is enough if an artist lacks a distinct national or cultural identity.
Speaking on Starr Chat with host Bola Ray, Ambolley acknowledged Black Sherif’s achievements, including Grammy nods and international acclaim, but emphasized the importance of cultural identification in music.
“What Black Sherif is doing, he’s doing the best he can,” Ambolley said. “But there’s no identification. Black Sherif doesn’t have an identity.
“Listen to the rhythm he’s singing on is it Ghanaian? However, Bola Ray who disagrees with Ambolley said “No, it’s pop music. People love it. They know he’s from Ghana, but the world is evolving.”
Ambolley argued that musical identity is critical for artists representing their countries on a global stage. “Identity is very, very important. Every country has its identification. Whatever Black Sherif is doing, he’s doing it nicely, but if there’s an identity attached, that will signify exactly where he’s coming from,” he added.
The veteran musician also made a pointed comparison with Nigerian artists, suggesting that their international success is linked to their cultural authenticity. “Look at the Nigerians they are more truthful to themselves. The way they think, the rhythms—they are more identical. That’s why they resonate globally.”
While Ambolley acknowledged Black Sherif’s accomplishments, including U.S. accolades, he questioned the reliance on international awards as validation. “No Grammy nominations yet. I don’t look at the Grammy as a form of validation for that kind of thing,” he said, highlighting the need for a balance between global appeal and local identity.
Ambolley’s comments are likely to ignite debate within Ghana’s music industry about the role of cultural authenticity in achieving global recognition, and whether international success alone defines a musician’s legacy.
