The National Identification Authority (NIA) has refuted reports suggesting that the Ghana Card can now be used to carry out financial transactions.
In a statement issued on April 8, the Authority described such claims as inaccurate and misleading, stressing that the Ghana Card has not been activated for financial transaction purposes.
The NIA advised the public to disregard the circulating information and rely only on official communications from the Authority regarding the use of the national identification card.
It acknowledged that ongoing high-level discussions are taking place among policymakers and key stakeholders within the financial and regulatory sectors on the possible future integration of the Ghana Card into financial systems. According to the Authority, the discussions are part of broader efforts to enhance digital identity usage and promote financial inclusion in the country.
However, the NIA emphasized that no final decision has been taken and that the deliberations remain inconclusive.
The Authority assured the public that any official policy direction or rollout regarding the use of the Ghana Card for financial transactions will be formally communicated through its verified channels.
The statement was signed by Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate of the NIA.
