Police in Cape Coast have confirmed the recovery of the body of a University of Cape Coast (UCC) student at Hutchland Beach, near Duakor, with investigations ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student at the University of Cape Coast.

According to the Cape Coast District Police Command, a report was received at about 6:00 a.m. on Friday, 12 June 2026, from residents of the Duakor community that a body had been washed ashore along the beach.
Police officers visited the scene and, after preliminary examination, found no visible signs of physical injury on the body. The remains were subsequently transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary for identification and further investigations.
The police said the identity of the deceased was later confirmed after the victim’s family, together with officials from the University of Cape Coast, visited the mortuary for the identification process.
The investigation was supported by information from the deceased’s roommate, who reported that Ms Avinu had not been seen since she left their residence two days earlier after receiving a phone call.
The police said the regional crime scene team has processed the location where the body was found, while the remains are being kept at the mortuary pending a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
The Cape Coast District Police Command has appealed to the public to avoid spreading unverified information about the incident, saying such reports could affect the ongoing investigation and cause distress to the family and the university community.
Meanwhile, the University of Cape Coast management has been informed and support measures are being provided to the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues as investigations continue.
