Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and NPP presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has admitted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government did not add any significant development to the Afari Military Hospital project during its eight years in office.
Speaking in an interview with the media, Mr Agyapong, who served as Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, said although he belongs to the NPP, he believes the truth must be told when discussing national issues.
According to him, the Afari Military Hospital project was initiated under former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration, adding that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government later continued with the project but failed to complete it during its eight-year tenure.
Mr Agyapong criticised attempts to blame only recent administrations over delays in completing the project, arguing that successive governments must accept responsibility for the state of the facility.
“I am an MPP [NPP], but I have to tell you the truth. We are talking about Ghana, and nobody should play politics with everything,” he said.
He disclosed that while serving as Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee, efforts to inspect the Afari Military Hospital site were unsuccessful after the committee was prevented from visiting the facility.
Mr Agyapong questioned claims that the hospital project had been left unattended for only 15 months, insisting that the delays stretched beyond the period being discussed.
“Has Afari Hospital been there for 15 months? We were there for eight years. You didn’t do it. Don’t blink your eye, I am telling you the gospel truth,” he said.
He urged politicians from both the NPP and NDC to prioritise national development over partisan interests, stressing that criticism should be directed at any party that fails to deliver for the country.
“We will criticise NDC, we will criticise NPP. That is the only way to go. Ghana, we should love our nation and stop playing politics with everything, and do the right thing for the country,” Mr Agyapong added.
