The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has launched a manhunt for a group of armed robbers following a deadly highway attack at Ahyiresu in the Nyinahin District on Sunday night.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road when six armed men ambushed a passenger bus. Three of the attackers were reportedly carrying pump-action guns.
Police say a VIP bus, with registration number AM 9334-20, was transporting about 30 football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea from Samreboi to Berekum when it came under attack. In an attempt to escape, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road into nearby bushes.
During the robbery, one of the passengers, identified as footballer Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but died while receiving treatment.
Another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was reportedly robbed of GHS 4,500. Police investigators retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to aid ongoing investigations.
The Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area as part of efforts to track down the suspects. Authorities have assured the public that those responsible will be apprehended.
Residents and commuters have been urged to remain calm and continue to cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue.
The statement was signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
