Mr. Ransford Antwi, an independent candidate for the Sunyani East Constituency, has vowed to challenge the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) longstanding dominance in the upcoming general elections.
The NPP has controlled this constituency since 1996, but Mr. Antwi believes the party’s failure to address the developmental needs of the local population provides a significant opportunity for change.
Driven by the lack of progress in the area, Mr. Antwi stated that influential figures within and outside the constituency have urged him to run, seeing his candidacy as a beacon of hope and a commitment to the community’s advancement.
A well-known businessman and philanthropist based in Sunyani, Mr. Antwi credits his established reputation for honesty and integrity as key factors that have garnered widespread support.
Speaking in an excusive interview with kumasimail.com‘s Bono regional correspondent Daniel D. Mensah in Sunyani, Mr. Antwi expressed confidence in his chances, citing a survey by Infoanalytic that identified him as the favored candidate among the electorate.
He emphasized that his campaign team is working tirelessly to maintain momentum and ensure nothing is left to chance.
“When I declared my intention to contest, some people thought I was joking and would eventually drop out. But I want to assure you that I am committed for the long haul,” Mr. Antwi said.
If elected, Mr. Antwi plans to focus on development and job creation, particularly by equipping the youth with employable skills.
He expressed concern over the declining condition of Sunyani East and the broader Sunyani area, which he attributed to a lack of substantial developmental initiatives.
Among the issues he aims to address are the deteriorating roads plagued by potholes, the neglected regional library, and the absence of a sports stadium. He believes that Sunyani, as the capital of the Bono Region, deserves better and urged the community to unite to bring about much-needed change.
Mr. Antwi also plans to establish a dedicated office to assist those in need and to hold town hall meetings to gather community input for improving service delivery.
He envisions creating a youth training center to provide skills similar to those taught by the Sunyani Development Youth Association, such as dressmaking and kente weaving.
The Sunyani East Constituency has been under the NPP’s control since J.H. Mensah first won the seat in 1996, later passing it on to the current MP, Akwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh.
In 2016, former Ghanaian Ambassador to Nigeria, George Kumi, also contested as an independent candidate but was unsuccessful in unseating the incumbent.
Mr. Antwi is determined to be the candidate who finally breaks the NPP’s grip on the constituency and brings about the change he believes Sunyani East desperately needs.
