The Sagnarigu Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Damankungyili, Nyeshie and adjoining communities following violent disturbances that claimed one life and left six others injured.
The curfew, which took effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, will be enforced daily from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. until further notice.
The decision was reached at an emergency MUSEC meeting held in consultation with the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to restore calm, safeguard lives and property, and prevent further escalation of the conflict.
Chairman of MUSEC and Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Abdulai Imoro Gong, condemned the violence, describing the clashes as a tragedy for the municipality.
“The recent disturbances between Damankungyili and Nyeshie have brought pain to our municipality, with one life lost and several injured. As Chairman of the Municipal Security Council, I strongly condemn these acts of violence,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
MUSEC expressed condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
As part of measures to restore order, the Council announced an immediate ban on the possession and carrying of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons within the affected communities. Joint police patrols have also been intensified to enforce the curfew and maintain law and order.
Hon. Gong appealed to chiefs, elders, youth groups and residents to support efforts to restore peace by cooperating fully with the security agencies.
“I appeal to chiefs, elders, youth, and residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and remember that violence hinders our communal progress. Together, let us uphold peace and unity for the development of Sagnarigu Municipality,” he said.
The Council also urged residents with credible information on the disturbances to assist the police with ongoing investigations, while calling on media organisations, particularly radio stations, to exercise restraint in their reportage and avoid commentary capable of inflaming tensions.
MUSEC assured residents that it would continue to monitor the security situation and provide further updates as necessary.
