The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has warned directors and senior officials within the health sector against altering approved staff postings, cautioning that such actions could cost them their positions.
Speaking during an engagement with the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the Minister stressed the need for discipline, fairness and strict adherence to administrative procedures in the management and deployment of health personnel.
He said the government is committed to ensuring equitable access to healthcare by prioritising the deployment of health workers to underserved regions and districts, where shortages continue to affect service delivery.
Mr. Akandoh noted that government is implementing a number of key health interventions aimed at improving access to quality healthcare, including the Free Primary Healthcare Initiative, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCare.
Addressing the status of the Agenda 111 hospital projects, the Minister acknowledged that implementation has been affected by funding constraints and construction delays, leaving many of the facilities incomplete.
He said the government’s immediate priority is to complete 35 of the projects and make them operational to improve healthcare delivery across the country.
To accelerate the completion of the hospitals, Mr. Akandoh appealed to faith-based organisations, including the Catholic Church, to partner with government on a non-profit basis in completing some of the facilities, with government undertaking to provide health professionals and the necessary operational support.
The Minister also acknowledged the longstanding contribution of the Catholic Church to healthcare delivery in Ghana and reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with faith-based health institutions.
President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, commended the Minister for his efforts to improve the health sector and called for deeper collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Catholic health institutions to enhance healthcare delivery.
The meeting formed part of the Ministry’s ongoing stakeholder engagements aimed at strengthening partnerships and improving healthcare services across the country.
