The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has outlined a number of achievements recorded in Ghana’s security and public safety sector, including the ongoing training of 10,000 recruits for the Police, Fire, Prisons and Immigration Services.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, the Minister said the first batch of 10,000 successful applicants is currently undergoing training, while another 10,000 applicants from the existing pool are expected to commence training next year.
On investigations into election-related killings, Mr Muntaka disclosed that 26 suspects had so far been put before the courts.
He said one of the suspects had been discharged, while the remaining 25 were currently standing trial. According to the Minister, security agencies are also pursuing 13 additional suspects for arrest, investigation and prosecution.
The Minister further disclosed that 3,241 migrant beggars had been repatriated to neighbouring countries by July 2026 as part of efforts to address irregular migration and associated public safety concerns.
Of the total, 2,281 were repatriated by the end of 2025, while an additional 960 had been repatriated between January and July 2026.
In the fight against illicit drugs, Mr Muntaka said operations by the Narcotics Control Commission had resulted in 217 arrests and 165 prosecutions.
The operations, he said, also led to the interception of more than 8.5 tonnes of narcotic drugs and 45.4 million Tramadol tablets.
The Minister added that authorities had recovered 73 tainted assets and seized more than 19 kilogrammes of gold in cases involving suspected drug-money laundering.
Assets and cash valued at more than GH¢6.9 million and US$440,000 had also been restrained as part of efforts to disrupt the financial networks associated with illicit drug activities.
Mr Muntaka said the measures formed part of broader efforts by the government and security agencies to strengthen public safety, improve accountability and combat organised crime and other security threats.
