A survey of New Patriotic Party (NPP) stakeholders indicates that 74.2% of respondents expect former Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi to win the party’s National General Secretary election scheduled for Oct. 3, 2026.
The survey, conducted by a team of lecturers from the University of Ghana, Legon, led by Dr. Chris Atadika, polled 889 NPP stakeholders on the contest for the party’s General Secretary position.
Respondents were asked: “Which candidate do you think will win the General Secretary position come 3rd October?”
Of the 889 respondents, 657, representing 74.2%, identified Eugene Boakye Antwi as the candidate they expected to win.
Incumbent General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua was identified by 223 respondents, representing 25.1%, while six respondents, or 0.7%, named Sylvester Tetteh.
The researchers, however, stressed that the figures measure respondents’ expectations and should not be interpreted as an independent prediction of the election outcome.
The report states that the findings represent “the expectations expressed by the surveyed respondents” rather than a forecast of the eventual result.
Other survey indicators
The survey also placed Mr. Boakye Antwi ahead of Mr. Kodua on several other measures.
On the question of the most preferred candidate, 76.6% of respondents selected Mr. Boakye Antwi, compared with 23.1% for Mr. Kodua.
When asked which candidate could help the NPP win the 2028 general election, 60.1% identified Mr. Boakye Antwi, while 39.2% selected Mr. Kodua.
The survey also recorded a higher level of name recognition for Mr. Boakye Antwi. Some 82.7% of respondents mentioned his name when asked to identify candidates contesting the General Secretary position, compared with 13% who mentioned Mr. Kodua.
Respondents identified good communication skills and boldness as the leading characteristics required for the position, accounting for 14.3% of responses. The ability to help the party secure victory in 2028 accounted for 11.3%, while the ability to unify the party accounted for 9.7%.
The researchers said these qualities were among those associated by respondents with Mr. Boakye Antwi.
The study was conducted among 889 NPP stakeholders, with the researchers reporting 100% awareness of the General Secretary contest among those surveyed.
The research team, led by Dr. Atadika, briefed journalists on the full findings at the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana, Legon, on Thursday.
