Upper West Regional Minister Charles Lwanga Puozuing has donated 13,800 exercise books to deprived and underserved schools across the region as schools reopen for the new academic year.
The books, presented through the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council to the Ghana Education Service (GES), are to be distributed across the region’s 11 Municipal and District Assemblies.
Each assembly is allocated 1,150 books, with education authorities directed to identify schools and communities with the greatest need.
At the handover, Mr Puozuing stressed that the materials must reach pupils who need them most and urged district education directors to work closely with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to improve learning conditions.
The Minister also used the occasion to highlight the persistent imbalance in teacher distribution, noting that while some schools have more teachers than required, communities in the hinterland continue to face shortages.
He said plans were underway to rationalise teacher deployment across the region and appealed to newly posted teachers to accept assignments in deprived communities rather than immediately seeking transfers to municipal centres.
The intervention, under the nationwide initiative “Educating Every Child, Strengthening Every Community,” coincided with the Minister’s participation in this year’s “My First Day in School” activities in the Wa Municipality.
Mr Puozuing, accompanied by the Regional Director of Education and the Municipal Chief Executive for Wa, visited Naa Pelpuo Islamic School, Tendamba Primary School and Danku Islamic Primary School to welcome pupils back to school.
He encouraged the pupils to take their education seriously, reminding them that they would become the future leaders of the country.
The Minister also commended teachers and school management for their commitment to educating children despite the challenges confronting basic education.
Speaking on behalf of the initiative, Upper West Regional Representative of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Ninfaazuma Benedict, described the donation as a timely intervention for learners in deprived communities.
