King Charles III has urged Commonwealth nations to confront the painful legacy of the transatlantic slave trade and work together to heal its enduring wounds, describing the atrocities as a shameful chapter in human history.

Speaking at the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda, the Head of the Commonwealth expressed personal sorrow over the suffering and abuses inflicted through slavery, acknowledging its lasting impact on Caribbean nations and other Commonwealth countries.

“History is not ours to choose or change. We cannot change the actions of those who came before us. We can, however, learn from the past,” he said.

The King pledged to work with member states to address the enduring consequences of historical injustices, although he stopped short of issuing a formal apology or endorsing reparations.

He called for stronger Commonwealth partnerships through investment in education, job creation, trade and climate resilience, particularly to improve opportunities for disadvantaged communities.

His comments come amid growing calls for reparatory justice from Caribbean governments and advocacy groups seeking recognition, accountability and concrete action to address the economic and social consequences of slavery.

Ahead of the summit, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham signalled Britain’s willingness to consider a formal state apology, urging honest conversations about the country’s historical involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.

He also proposed alternative measures of support, including debt restructuring and more favourable repayment terms for poorer Commonwealth nations.

The question of reparations remains a major issue at this year’s summit, with calls for Britain and other former colonial powers to move beyond expressions of regret towards tangible measures addressing the lasting consequences of slavery.
