At least a total of 22 candidates have filed their nominations for the upcoming December 7th 2024 presidential elections . These candidates, representing a mix of political parties and independent contenders, are vying for the highest office in Ghana.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is currently reviewing the submissions and will make a decision on whether to accept or reject some of the candidates who submitted their paperwork after the 13th September 2024 deadline.

Political Party Candidates are:

  • Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (New Patriotic Party – NPP): The current Vice President of Ghana is the NPP’s flagbearer, seeking to continue the party’s leadership for another term.
  • John Dramani Mahama (National Democratic Congress – NDC): A former President of Ghana, Mahama is once again the NDC’s candidate, hoping for a comeback in 2024.
  • Kofi Akpaloo (Liberal Party of Ghana – LPG): Representing the LPG, Akpaloo aims to challenge the major parties with his policies and vision.
  • Christian Kwabena Andrews (Ghana Union Movement – GUM): Also known as “Osofo Kyiri Abosom,” Andrews is leading the GUM in his second attempt at the presidency.
  • Dr. Hassan Ayariga (All People’s Congress – APC): Ayariga, a familiar face in Ghanaian politics, represents the APC.
  • Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong (National Democratic Party – NDP): Frimpong is hoping to secure the presidency for the NDP, a party formed by former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings.
  • Akua Donkor (Ghana Freedom Party – GFP): A vocal figure, Donkor is back on the political stage as the GFP’s candidate.
  • Nana Akosua Frimpongmaa Sarpong Kumankumah (Convention People’s Party – CPP): Kumankumah, the current chairperson of the CPP, seeks to revive the party’s fortunes in 2024.
  • Bernard Mornah (People’s National Convention – PNC): Former PNC Chairman, Mornah, is the party’s choice to contest the presidential election.
  • Dr. Daniel Augustus Lartey (Great Consolidated Popular Party – GCPP): Lartey, son of the party’s founder, will run on the GCPP ticket.

Independent Candidates

Several independent candidates have also thrown their hats into the ring, including:

  1. Nana Kwame Bediako
  2. Samuel Appiah Danquah
  3. George Twum Barima

Late Submissions Under Review

The Electoral Commission will decide whether to accept or reject the nominations of Dr. Nii Amu Darko (independent) and Kofi Asamoah Siaw of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) as both candidates filed their paperwork after the deadline.

Unable to File

Dr. Agnes Ayisha, another independent candidate, was unable to file her nomination by the EC’s deadline. The final list of accepted candidates will be confirmed once the Electoral Commission completes its vetting process.
