The Asante Professionals Club (APC) has voiced deep concern over the increasing incidents of ethnocentric attacks targeting the Asante people and their revered leader, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
In a strongly worded statement, the APC condemned these actions, describing them as “unwarranted and distasteful,” and emphasized their threat to the unity and respect that underpin Ghanaian society.
The APC expressed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the dignity and heritage of the Asante people. “As proud Asantes, we stand for unity, strength, and cultural pride, with our rich traditions rooted in a centralized governance system built on respect for customs and values,” the statement read.
The group firmly rejected all forms of ethnocentrism, discrimination, and disrespect directed at the Asante people and their leadership.
At the heart of the APC’s concerns is the rising disrespect towards Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of Asanteman, who holds a position of immense cultural, spiritual, and national significance. As custodian of Asante traditions, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has provided wise and compassionate leadership for over 25 years, promoting peace, fostering unity, and contributing significantly to Ghana’s national development.
“Otumfuo Osei Tutu II symbolizes the cultural heritage and unity of Asanteman. His leadership has been pivotal in preserving the legacy of the Asante people while encouraging harmony among all Ghanaians,” the APC said.
The club praised Otumfuo’s commitment to national unity and his leadership in social and developmental initiatives that benefit all Ghanaians, irrespective of their ethnic background.
The APC highlighted several key contributions of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, including his establishment of the Otumfuo Educational Fund, which has provided educational support to many Ghanaians, including non-Asantes.
They also praised his leadership in rehabilitating the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, one of the country’s major healthcare facilities, which serves as a vital referral center for the northern sector of Ghana and beyond.
The club further noted the inclusive and hospitable nature of the Asante people, particularly in Kumasi, where non-Asantes live and interact freely with the Asante leadership.
“Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s reign has been marked by inclusivity, respect, and progress. His legacy is inseparably tied to the promotion of national unity, and his efforts have earned admiration both in Ghana and globally,” the APC emphasized.
In reaffirming their loyalty and support for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the APC called on all peace-loving Ghanaians to reject divisive and ethnocentric rhetoric that threatens the country’s peace and unity.
“Let us work together to build a Ghana where mutual respect, understanding, and harmony flourish across all cultural backgrounds,” the statement concluded.
The APC’s call comes at a time when tensions around ethnic divisions are simmering in certain parts of the country, and the group hopes that their message of unity and respect will resonate across the nation.
