The Upper West Regional Directorate of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended all branch election activities in the Lambussie Constituency and declared elections reportedly conducted there on June 1, 2026, null and void.
In a directive dated June 2, 2026, and signed by the Upper West Regional Director of Elections and IT, Ishmael Dibkuu, the party accused the Lambussie Constituency Elections Committee of conducting branch elections without authorization from the Regional Elections Directorate.
According to Mr. Dibkuu, the NDC had not officially commenced branch elections anywhere in Ghana, and no approved timetable had been communicated to constituencies within the Upper West Region.
“We write to bring to your attention that our party (NDC) is yet to officially commence branch elections across all constituencies in Ghana,” Mr. Dibkuu stated in the letter addressed to the Lambussie Constituency Elections Committee through the Constituency Executive Committee.
He further emphasized that the Regional Elections Directorate had not issued any approved schedule indicating the commencement or closing dates for branch elections.
Despite this, Mr. Dibkuu said the Lambussie Constituency Elections Committee went ahead with branch polls on June 1 “without any authorization, directive, or official communication from the Regional Elections Directorate.”
“The conduct of these elections is contrary to established party procedures and undermines the coordinated electoral process being implemented by the party,” he stated.
As a result, Mr. Dibkuu declared that the elections purportedly conducted on June 1 are “hereby declared null, void and of no effect whatsoever.”
The Regional Elections Director subsequently ordered an immediate halt to all election-related activities in the constituency.
“Accordingly, you are directed to immediately suspend and discontinue any ongoing branch election activities within the Lambussie Constituency pending the official release of schedules and directives from the Upper West Regional Elections Directorate,” he directed.
Mr. Dibkuu also tasked the Constituency Executive Committee with ensuring full compliance with the directive and maintaining order within the party’s structures.
“The Constituency Executive Committee is expected to ensure strict compliance with this directive and to take all necessary measures to maintain order and adherence to party regulations,” he stated.
He urged party officials to treat the matter with urgency, expressing confidence that the directive would receive the seriousness it deserves.
Reorganization Exercise Underway
The development comes as the NDC prepares for a nationwide internal reorganization exercise expected to run through the remainder of 2026.
The process is set to begin with branch executive elections, which will be followed by constituency, regional, and national executive elections as the party restructures its leadership machinery from the grassroots to the national level ahead of future political contests.
The suspension in Lambussie underscores the party’s determination to enforce compliance with established electoral procedures and maintain a coordinated approach to the internal elections process.
Party officials are yet to announce an official timetable for the commencement of branch elections in the Upper West Region and across the country.
