The National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Yammin, has leveled allegations against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of deploying over 200 individuals disguised as military personnel to the Ashanti Region ahead of the December 7 general elections.
Speaking to the media, Yammin expressed concerns over the movement of these supposed military personnel, stating that they were transported in private vehicles without registered number plates to selected constituencies in the region. He further alleged that these deployments were being coordinated by the NPP’s regional and constituency executives without the knowledge of the Ashanti Regional Military Command.
Yammin warned that the NDC was fully aware of these actions and would not tolerate any attempt to manipulate the election results. “Currently, the ballot boxes and papers are being transported to the Drobonso constituency. We are telling the NPP that we know all their plans. If they try anything tomorrow, we will react in equal measure,” he declared.
He also criticized the Inspector General of Police (IGP), urging him to address the situation and prove that the Ghana Police Service is in charge of election security. According to Yammin, the alleged actions of the NPP have eroded public trust in the Ghanaian military. “The military uniform that Ghanaians respected for years has now lost its respect because they have lowered their professionalism by doing the political bidding of the NPP,” he lamented.
Yammin further asserted that the NDC was prepared to resist any acts of intimidation during the elections. “If they fire from the left, we will fire from the right. If they slap us, we will respond in kind,” he warned.
He questioned why the NPP would deploy such personnel to 34 constituencies in the Ashanti Region if they were confident of their work in the area. “If the NPP has truly done well in the Ashanti Region, why would they feel the need to deploy military personnel in an attempt to rig the election?” he asked.
Yammin concluded by reiterating his call for the IGP to take decisive action to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election.
While concluding the press conference, a group of angry NDC youth stormed the meeting, questioning the relevance of the event given the lack of countermeasures against the alleged agenda of the NPP.
