President-elect John Dramani Mahama has expressed his hope that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will quickly recover from its recent electoral defeat and work towards rebuilding itself as a key player in Ghana’s democratic process.
Speaking during a curtsey call on him by former NPP’s former trader minister and flag bearer hopeful Alan Kwadwo Kyeremangen, the President-elect emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong multi-party democracy in Ghana, noting that the health of political parties is crucial for sustaining the country’s democratic system.
“Since 1992, we have upheld the Fourth Republic and our democracy based on the maintenance of the constitution and multi-party democracy. The strength and health of political parties are central to the care of our democracy,” Mahama stated.
The president-elect expressed his belief that political parties, regardless of their position in government or opposition, play a significant role in national development. “We must ensure that all political parties remain vibrant and healthy, as their contributions are essential for the growth and development of our nation,” he said.
Reflecting on the NPP’s recent defeat, Mahama suggested that the signs of internal discord and disconnection from the public were evident long before the election. “We could see it coming. I have been in politics long enough to notice something was wrong within the NPP. Their leadership appeared tone-deaf to the concerns of the people,” he remarked.
He noted that the NPP’s inability to address public dissatisfaction and internal challenges ultimately led to their loss. “It was obvious that their failure to tune in to the reality on the ground cost them this election,” Mahama explained.
Despite the setback for the NPP, Mahama highlighted that such disruptions can provide an opportunity for reflection and renewal. He called on the NPP leadership to reconcile differences, rebuild trust, and reposition the party as a strong pillar of Ghana’s democracy.
“A new beginning is sometimes necessary. The NPP must find a way to reconcile and put the pieces back together. A rebuilt and revitalized NPP will ensure it remains a viable vehicle for sustaining our democracy,” he concluded.
Mahama’s remarks reflect his commitment to fostering unity and ensuring a stable political environment as Ghana moves forward. His comments come as the nation prepares for a transition of power following a hotly contested election.
