Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra today, May 26, 2025.
This follows an invitation extended by the CID last week to Wontumi, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Akonta Mining Company Limited, to assist with investigations into alleged illegal mining activities in forest reserves within the Western and Ashanti Regions.
On Friday, May 23, a team of joint security personnel from the National Security and the Ghana Police Service reportedly attempted to forcibly arrest Wontumi at his Daaban residence in Kumasi after he failed to honor the police invitation.
His lawyer, Kwame Adom Appiah—who also serves as the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP explained that Wontumi was unable to comply with the initial invitation due to ill health.
“After discussions with the national security personnel, who arrived with a search warrant to arrest him, they agreed to allow him to continue his medical treatment and report to the CID on Monday,” Appiah said.
He added that his client had officially communicated with the CID, requesting additional time to recover before appearing for questioning next Monday.
“So, we were very surprised to see armed security personnel at his residence. It was unfortunate,” he bemoaned.
