The Ashanti Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for its sustained support for journalists who were injured in a road accident while covering an EPA-led operation against illegal mining.
The accident occurred on November 6, 2025, at Afari near Nkawie in the Ashanti Region, during an assignment on illegal mining activities.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 16, 2026, and signed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GJA, Kofi Adu Domfeh, the association said all but one of the affected journalists have fully recovered and resumed work.
The journalists who have returned to duty are Ibrahim Abubakar of TV3/Akoma FM, Doris Lonta of Channel One TV, Nana Yaw Gyimah of Luv FM/JoyNews, and Joseph Obeng of Nhyira FM/Adom News.
According to the statement, Akwasi Adomako, a camera technician with JoyNews, who underwent surgery on his right thigh, is recovering steadily and is currently recuperating at home.
As part of efforts to monitor their recovery, the Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, together with the Ashanti Regional Director, Dr. Jackson Adiyia Nyantakyi, and the Eastern Regional Director, Mr. Sydney Danso, paid courtesy visits to the injured journalists and held engagements with the management of their respective media houses.
The GJA said the visits were aimed at assessing the condition of the journalists and reaffirming the EPA’s commitment to their welfare.
“The Ashanti GJA deeply appreciates the EPA’s sustained commitment to the welfare and recovery of the journalists during this challenging period,” the statement said.
While encouraging journalists to remain committed to environmental protection and public-interest reporting, the association urged media practitioners to prioritise their personal safety, especially when working in volatile or high-risk environments.
The GJA also called on institutions and stakeholders to ensure adequate safety and security measures are provided whenever journalists are engaged in assignments that pose potential risks.
