The trial of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, commences today, Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
This development follows his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, in compliance with a directive issued by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine.
Chairman Wontumi faces charges related to illegal mining activities and mining without a licence, in connection with Akonta Mining Limited, a company he is alleged to own.
He was granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million ahead of today’s proceedings.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the charges centre on “mining without a licence” and assured that the matter will be fully addressed in court.
He, however, maintained his client’s innocence, stating:
“As you have seen, we will go to court, and that is where the decision will be taken. We are not here to maintain innocence, but we are prepared to proceed and present our defence.”
The case has drawn significant public attention, given Wontumi’s high-profile position within the ruling party and the ongoing national fight against illegal mining, commonly known as Galamsey.
