The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has convened the leadership of Ghana’s health sector for a two-day retreat aimed at reviewing sector performance in 2025 and outlining strategic priorities for 2026.
The retreat, which opened on Monday, January 12, 2026, in Ada, brings together key stakeholders including the Chief Director and Directors of the Ministry of Health (MoH), board chairpersons and members, heads of agencies, representatives from civil society organizations, and other invited participants.
Dubbed the “Ministry of Health 2025 Performance Review and Outlook for 2026,” the meeting is intended to assess achievements made in 2025, identify operational challenges, align sector priorities, and strengthen coordination across institutions to enhance health service delivery nationwide.
Opening remarks were delivered by the Chief Director of the Ministry, followed by an address from the Minister of Health.
Over the two-day period, participants are engaging in comprehensive review sessions, thematic discussions, and forward-planning exercises for the year ahead.
Directorates within the Ministry of Health, including Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation; Human Resource for Health; Infrastructure; Training and Capacity Development; and Technical Assistance and Donor Coordination, are presenting reports on their respective performance and outlooks.
Key agencies such as the Ghana Health Service, National Health Insurance Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Tamale Teaching Hospital are also presenting institutional performance reports.
The retreat further features presentations from regulatory bodies and professional councils, including the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Medical and Dental Council, Allied Health Professions Council, and the Pharmacy Council, providing a comprehensive overview of both regulatory and service delivery functions within the sector.
A major component of the retreat is the 2026 strategic planning session, to be led by the Minister of Health, which will focus on policy direction, sector priorities, and collaborative actions required to accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage, improve access to essential health services, and strengthen system resilience.
The Ministry of Health said the initiative underscores its commitment to promoting high performance standards, improving resource efficiency, strengthening evidence-based decision-making, and enhancing collaboration across agencies.
The Ministry reaffirmed its resolve to build a strong, responsive, and people-centered health system capable of addressing current challenges and emerging public health threats.
