A heavy security presence has been deployed to Obuasi Senior High Technical School in the Ashanti Region as police investigate an incident that triggered violent unrest on campus, leaving the headmaster hospitalized and causing extensive damage to school property.
Six people have been arrested in connection with the disturbances, which erupted after students alleged that the school’s headmaster, Abdullai Zakari, had buried the body of a newborn on the school premises.
According to reports, the incident occurred between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. when a student claimed to have spotted the headmaster’s vehicle near the school’s refuse dump. The student reportedly alerted colleagues, who gathered at the location and alleged they had discovered the body of an infant estimated to be between five and six months old.
The students subsequently confronted the headmaster and assaulted him, leaving him with multiple injuries. He is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
Police officers later arrived at the scene, exhumed the body and conveyed it to the morgue for further examination as investigations commenced.
The swift intervention by the police prevented further escalation, although the students vandalized property, including items at the headmaster’s bungalow. Some first-year students were also reportedly attacked after senior students accused them of supporting the headmaster.
In response to the unrest, the Head of the Obuasi Municipal Security Council, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, accompanied by senior police officers, visited the school and appealed to students to remain calm while investigations continue.
The Obuasi Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu, assured students of their safety and said adequate security personnel had been deployed to maintain law and order on campus.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged burial and the subsequent violence, while those arrested assist with inquiries.
