The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has issued a strong warning to commercial drivers within the metropolis who are charging unapproved transport fares, describing the practice as illegal and punishable.
In a statement released on Monday, the Office of the Mayor, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, revealed that some drivers have begun charging fares not sanctioned by the appropriate regulatory bodies.
The Assembly emphasized that the Tripartite Committee which includes the Ministry of Transport, representatives from transport unions (GPRTU and GRTCC), and regulatory and consumer advocacy groups has not convened to approve any new fare adjustments.
“It is therefore unlawful for any commercial driver to charge unapproved fares in the metropolis,” the statement read.
To enforce the directive, the Mayor has instructed the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and the Metro Guards to monitor major roads in Kumasi and arrest any drivers found violating the fare regulations. Offenders risk having their vehicles impounded and facing prosecution.
The KMA is urging all commercial drivers and the general public to comply with the directive as part of efforts to restore order and discipline on the city’s roads.
