A young carpenter believed to be in his 20s has died after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of youth at Sabon Zango in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region over accusations of involvement in an alleged theft.
According to reports, the deceased, identified only as Yussif, was accused of masterminding the theft of GH¢4,500, prompting some youth in the community to allegedly attack him.
Speaking anonymously to Hamza TV, the deceased’s sister said the family was informed of the incident after Yussif had already been beaten unconscious.
“We rushed him to the Manhyia Hospital, but we were told there were no available beds. We then transferred him to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival,” she said.
Chairman Bawa, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Neighbourhood Watch Committee, confirmed that one suspect, identified as Musah, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
He added that 12 other suspects believed to have participated in the assault are currently on the run, and efforts are underway to apprehend them.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Mortuary pending an autopsy, while police continue investigations into the incident.
The latest case has renewed concerns over incidents of mob justice in parts of the country, with security experts and human rights advocates consistently urging the public to hand over crime suspects to the police instead of taking the law into their own hands.
