The incumbent Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrew Nana Akwasi, has begun his campaign to retain the position for a third term.
Nana Akwasi is campaigning under the slogan “Adwumapa Ntoasoo Retain Nana Akwasi,” as the contest for the regional chairmanship takes shape.
He is facing competition from the party’s Ashanti Regional Organiser, Isham Alhassan Bonsu, who is also seeking the chairmanship.
Before becoming the NDC’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Nana Akwasi served as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Ejisu Constituency and as the party’s Regional Vice Chairman.
In campaign materials circulating in the Ashanti Region, Nana Akwasi highlights his experience in party administration and points to what he describes as previous gains in the region’s parliamentary representation.
“I have gained the experience to serve and lead. I have done it before and I will even do more. I come with experience,” he said in the campaign message.
He further argues that his previous service gives him the experience needed to lead the party in the region, adding that the NDC does not need to take unnecessary risks with new leadership.
According to the campaign material, Nana Akwasi says he helped increase the NDC’s parliamentary seats in the Ashanti Region from three to four and subsequently from four to seven.
He has also set a target of securing at least 10 parliamentary seats for the NDC in the Ashanti Region in the 2028 general election.
“2028 is the next target and I’m fully committed to taking the NDC to at least 10 parliamentary seats in the Ashanti Region,” the campaign message states.
Nana Akwasi says he remains committed to continuing the work of strengthening the party in the region, pledging to devote greater effort to achieving the party’s objectives.
The emerging contest is expected to attract significant attention within the NDC’s Ashanti Regional branch as the party prepares for its internal elections.
