Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John has urged MTN Ghana to expand network coverage in underserved communities across the region, warning that poor connectivity is increasingly hampering business, education and access to digital services.
He made the call on Friday, August 14, 2026, when an MTN Ghana delegation led by Senior Manager for Base Station Subsystems, Emmanuel Afutu, paid a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC).
The engagement formed part of MTN Ghana’s stakeholder tour of the region as the company marks its 30th anniversary.
Mr Afutu briefed the Minister on MTN’s operations and its contribution to national development, including scholarships, SME training, digital skills development and support for educational infrastructure.
He also highlighted the company’s collaboration with security agencies to protect network infrastructure and telecommunication services.
While commending MTN for its interventions, Mr Ali Adolf said network gaps remained a major concern in parts of the Northern Region, particularly underserved and hard-to-reach communities.
He said unreliable connectivity was affecting communication, education, commerce, digital financial transactions, access to information and other economic activities.

The Minister therefore urged MTN to intensify investment in network infrastructure and improve service quality across the region.
“Improved connectivity will contribute significantly to the development of education, healthcare, agriculture, entrepreneurship and security,” he said, adding that reliable networks were also essential for young people and businesses seeking to participate in the digital economy.
Mr Ali Adolf assured MTN of the NRCC’s readiness to collaborate with the company to resolve operational challenges and support the expansion of telecommunications services.
Mr Afutu said MTN would continue to engage stakeholders and communities as part of efforts to improve service delivery and strengthen its contribution to regional development.
The meeting ended with a commitment by the NRCC and MTN Ghana to deepen collaboration on network expansion, digital inclusion and socio-economic development across the Northern Region.
